Themes For Our OTS Task

This is the theme called Allan Cameron and we decided that we could use this theme as we would like to use the split screen aspect of the theme as we think it would be affected for our story line. This could be easily used for our detective scene in our OTS task.
This is the Levi Strauss theme. We have used this for the idea of the two characters being corresponding. For our story it would be that the detective is the hero and is light where as the killer is the villain and has a dark atmosphere around him.

This final theme is called Barthes action and enigma code. We have chosen this for the idea of the enigma scenario and the 'Who done it' scene in our OTS task. The enigma is also helpful to link the terrorist with the detective e.g does he know him.

Final OTS Task ( ISHBANDAM Productions)

For my final OTS ( Opening Title Sequence Task) I have decided to work with Ishaaq and Adam and we have decided to call our production team , Ishbandam productions. We have chosen to work together as we believe we cooperate well and can share all of our different qualities and separate the tasks to create a good final piece.

We have now begun to create a basic story line/plot for our OTS and will begin to develop full plans shortly including Idents etc.

Sound Foleying

 Sound Foleying

This is a small collection on foleying sounds I created to practice creating sounds to get a feel of how it works and how I could use these skills or even some of the sounds in my final OTS task.

Story Task

Story Task

For this task we were set to jumble up random locations and situations and create a story out of them. For our story we had the location of Paris and we had a main character known as Dino Dave, Dino Dave has a gun and an umbrella and he stabbed Wendy and her cat. The title of our story is, Who knows whats really going on ? And this fits well as nobody really knows what is happening.

The purpose of this task was to help us think of different story lines and things which can be used.

Different Ways Of Sound Within A Film

Different Ways Of Sound Within A Film

This is a small task in which I did to enable me to see the different ways sound is used and created in a film. I did this to help with my Final OTS task in deciding which sounds are appropiate and learning which sounds should go where. This will allow me to see and refer to all of the different sound types which could be used within a film.

Little Red Riding Hood Continuity Task

Little Red Riding Hood Evaluation

Evaluation:

Overall, from the viewing of our final piece we got some good feedback from our classmates. However, I think that one way in which we could improve was to have more actors or more people to take part in the production of the final piece, so that the characters were not repeated and a moving camera could have been used instead of just a still camera.

When we begin to start the Title Sequence with Ishbandam productions , I will begin too take more time in the set and the location in which are scenes are set. Alot more time will also be put into the sound and lighting as we feel these were big areas that we didn't pay much attention too, which again could link to the low amount of cast members we had in our production.

Also ion the production of our continuity task we had small ideas, such as using a house in the woods as our location. However, this was very hard too find and be able to use, therefore we had to rethink about our locations and use a simple old fashioned house to represent the house of Granddad.

This task was useful to us as a group as it allowed us to test different camera angles too see which was good to use in our final production. However, I already knew most of the camera angles but it was good to refamillarise ourselves with the different angles and what they represent.

This task took a little bit longer then expected, due to the fact we only had two people ( Me and Ishaaq ) to do all of the tasks between us. This meant that we shared a lot of the workload and we got too grips with all of the different categories needed to make a short continuity task which we can develop and use in our final OTS task.

I enjoyed watching the clip over with the class, as it allowed me too see that our final scene , where Wolf shot Granddad, was very well filmed and edited. This was a risk we took with the lighting, location and camera angle, but everyone seemed to enjoy it and it went down very well.

To improve next time I would, do a lot more planning, as we were a two man group we only had a short simple storyboard to base all our planning off and many of our lines were improvised and not very well thought through. This lead to a lot more takes needing to be took which made it harder and harder to finish. I would also think a lot more about the thing in which we base it off as I think it did not fully suit us.

Little Red Riding Hood Still Image Preperation

This is a rough story board in which we made to get a rough idea of the shots we wanted and the character we wanted to be in them. We also used this to note down the camera angle in which we wanted to use to shoot the stills.

Foley

In the link below I have selected a video on youtube which shows show how foleying is used to create great scenes in big movies such as Jurassic park. The clip explains how foleying is done and what foleying is which is the creation of sound effects using simple objects.

Media And Me

Powered by emaze

This is a short presentation about Me and the media basically, I used emaze to do this and at first struggled with the concept of using it and how things work etc but after I played around with it I quickly got the idea of the program and found it quick and easy to use in the end.

Film Noir Examples Double Indemnity

 Double Indemnity:

In the Noir film ' Double Indemnity' the femme fatale character is shown in a very explicit, dangerous way. She is made out to be a 'jail bait' character as in one scene she is posed standing at the top of the stairs in nothing but a towel seen to be looking 'glamorous' to the eyes of the everyman. This was almost a shock for the audiences back in the time this was created as this was new to them and they would not have witnessed this sort of scene before. As she is shown to be a 'flirt' by the way she is posed , it also shows her as dominant which can also shock the audience in the
time in which this was created. Double Indemnity however also follows the film noir narrative rules as of how it starts at the end and almost finishes at the start , in this weird vice versa fashion.

Noir Practice

We were looking at traditional film noir narratives as I previously said they tend to follow an order, and we were giving a noir jumbled up narrative and we had to go and use still images to show how the storyline of the Noir went. These are my still images.

The General Conventions Of A Film Noir

Camera And Composition:

In a film Noir film there is many different obscure and relevant camera angles and composition used to create mass effects on the film. This is used to make them relevant too their genre and make them better to watch. The most common camera angle used in a Film Noir is a low angle shot as it looks up on the character and makes him seem more powerful and a higher status then some of the other characters seen in the movie. For example in the film 'the Black Dahlia' the camera is positioned in a low angle to look up on the Every man (Bucky) and then positioned higher to show the less dominant characters at a lower standard to him.  The other common shot commonly used in a Film Noir is a slightly tilted shot which is also known as a 'Dutch' shot and it is used to show distortion in the films.

Editing:

In a Film Noir there is many pieces of editing used to make it the film it is. It starts with basic edits which include sparks and shots which come of a gun when shooting. A way where good editing is used is when the shooting is usually done in the day and they edit it to use night time filters so it gives a clear shot but keeps the night time effect. Another classic piece of editing used in a Film Noir is jump shots and juxtaposition , this is used to give more effect on a shot and it is carefully edited and transitioned  so it leaves a good final product.

Sound:

The sound in a Film Noir is used to complement  the feeling of pessimism and foreboding that was reflected in the films. They use sounds such as Jazz or downbeat music to create an effect on the viewer and to build tension in certain scenes in the film. Another type of sound commonly used in Film Noir to build upon tension and suspense in a scene is Heavy breathing and sudden noises, these are simply used to create more atmosphere in the scene and a sense of realism in the scene.

Mise En Scene:

In a typical Film Noir movie the most common location found is a very typical urban city which you or I could live in. This is done to make the local seem more relatable and realistic to the viewer and is a change from the extravagant locations commonly used in films. The location often has dark damp rainy streets to show the darkness side of the movie and the dark location in which it is set. This links to one of the examples i studied ' Double Indemnity' which is set in a dark damp area and low key lighting to create an effect on the location chosen. In double indemnity the men are also shown in a suit to show their importance and posture where as the women are often in high heels and dresses.

Narratives:

In a film Noir there is many narratives and choices used , here is a selection of them:

  • Heists
  • Double Crosses
  • Gangsters
  • Murder
  • Drugs
  • Wrong decisions
The narrative structure of a film noir is that they normally start at the end and work through backwards and also they result in the punishment of the femme fatal and the everyman , which is a social message to the audience.

Characters:

In a Film Noir film the characters are often varied but are always similar. The same characters are used in this genre as they are a big part in it and make the genre what it is. Some examples of Characters are:

  • Detectives
  • Henchman or Thugs
  • Gangsters
  • Millionaires
  • Crooked Police / Mafia
  • Crooked Governments
However the main characters being 'The Every Man' and the 'Femme Fatale' are always used in a Film Noir. This is due to there big part and you could not simply have a Film Noir without these roles. These parts always make the film and always have a huge role to play in the plot of the movie.

Film Noir

The film genre Film Noir was introduced in the 1940s shortly after world war 2. It is commonly known as a stylish Hollywood crime drama. It is believed to have stretched up until the 1950s and has a low key black and white visual style. This was highly unknown to most american film producers from this old school classical era and its dark stylistic detective films were surprisingly accepted by society in this time.
The film usually consists of a very similar plot and usually has the same character roles which are:

  • The Everyman
  • The femme-fatale
  • The Henchman
  • The Villain
  • The Girl Next Door

The Everyman which is also known as the Anti Hero , usually has a bad past for instance been in prison many times, However the role of the anti hero commonly the character turns out to be a better man and a nice character then which his past shows. However the "Everyman" tends to fall 'deeply' in love with the femme fatal and tends to commit crimes and deeds to impress her for her benefit. The general conventions of a femme fatale tends to be a stereotypical young attractive women wearing clothes to impress which always ends up luring in the Everyman. The henchman are the 'Bad guys' as they work with the villain in an attempt to kill the every man which may or may not link to his past or even the things he does to impress the femme fatale. The role called 'The girl next door' is simply the girl who is often young and innocent and does not get involved with the violent side , and more often then not the role is used to show that the Everyman wants the girl next door , but he often does not know it.

What is A Sweded Film ?

A Sweded film is a low budgeted recreation of a famous film which is created normally by amateur actors. It uses very little low budgeted props in which to recreate iconic scenes

The Rules Of A Sweded Film Are :
  • Must be based on an already produced film
  • Range 2-8 minutes in length
  • Must not contain computer generated graphics
  • Based on films less than 35 years old
  • Special effects must be limited to camera tricks and arts ’n crafts
  • Sound effects created by human means
Finally, Sweded films are made and meant to be funny and silly but some are created at a very high standard.
